The Pattern

This has a name: charm pricing, also called psychological pricing. It simply means setting a price just below a round number. ₹999 instead of ₹1000. ₹4,999 instead of ₹5,000. ₹14,999 instead of ₹15,000.

Open your food delivery app at midnight. Almost every dish, every coupon, ends in a 9. That is not an accident.

Thomas and Morwitz (2005) tested left-digit anchoring directly. People felt the gap between ₹2.99 and ₹3.00 was much bigger than one cent — because the left digit changed.

A study by Anderson and Simester found prices ending in 9 raised demand by up to 24% compared to lower prices. A product priced at $39 outsold the same product at $34. The higher price won — because it ended in 9.

In India, there's an extra layer: "four figures" vs "five figures." ₹9,999 sits "below ₹10,000." In a market where that line is a real budget boundary for millions of buyers, it carries genuine psychological weight.

The Consequence

This goes far beyond price tags.

The same machinery — left-digit anchoring, threshold framing, "just below" — runs through almost every commercial decision you make. The EMI that quotes you a small monthly number. The subscription priced just under a round annual figure. The course at ₹4,999 instead of ₹5,000.

You have a fast system and a slow system. The fast one makes almost every purchase decision. It is brilliant, efficient, and very easy to steer.

Knowing this doesn't make you immune. It buys you half a second — a small pause to ask if the slow system should look before you tap "Buy Now."

For most decisions, the ₹1 difference doesn't matter.

For the big ones, that half-second does.
